Be honest with your stylist
You may think this seems silly, but we have all been there when we don't want to tell our stylist, "yes I did cut my own hair, " or "I do my own color. "

The reason isn't because we are being nosy, but because this could affect the work of art you're paying for, and we want you to go home happy and feeling beautiful!

We don't question you to make you feel ashamed or because we want to grill you, we need to know, especially when we are dealing with chemicals such as a relaxer or color or perm. Let me give you an example: there was a client who wanted highlights. No big deal right? During the consultation she was asked if she swam. She said she did occasionally maybe a couple times in the last month. Once again no big deal.
Wrong.
The stylist doing the hair, applied the lightener in foils. Several minutes later, the stylist reached for a foil to check the process and burned her fingers on the foil.

What?!?!?
Yes burned her fingers. The client thankfully was ok.

How did that happen? The client was actually an avid swimmer, swimming 2-3 times a week in a chlorine pool, and she had gone on vacation and swam in salt water 2 weeks prior. The chlorine build up mixed with salt water build up on the hair caused a dangerous chemical reaction with the lightener, causing the foils to become literally blistering hot. The client was very fortunate to not be burned and lost a few pieces of hair.
The process could have all been prevented if the client said she was a weekly swimmer versus "been in the pool a couple times this month." All that simply would have happened is a clarifying shampoo would have been used to get rid of build up on the hair at the beginning.

It is so important to let your stylist know what you do that involves your hair. If you had cut your own hair prior your haircut at the salon, it's important to notify us, because maybe a haircut you want just won't go with some of those uneven pieces (yes, if you cut your own hair you're 99% likely to have alot of uneven pieces).

And boxed color is different from salon color. If you have boxed color, it is important to tell us so we can be aware of any action we need to take extra to give you the outcome you desire, rather than after the fact wondering why a color didn't turn out that way it should. This goes back to maybe even 2 years ago if you have long hair. It all stays in there even if it faded.
If you do like to cut your own bangs, ask your stylist for some tips to show you. We are more than willing to advise you if we can. After all we are the experts, and we want happy clients, with happy hair! ;)
